How Do We Prepare for the New COVID Variants?

January 7, 2022

COVID variants

Once again, there is worldwide panic over the odd, growing list of COVID-19 variants. Typically, viruses mutate more quickly than human cells do and we don’t know if future versions will either be less dangerous or more fatal.

In 2021, the Delta variant spread faster and caused more severe infections especially to those with underlying physical conditions.  The new Omicron variant, health experts agree, is less dangerous yet definitely more contagious.

Six days into the new year, the Philippines recorded 17,220 new cases of COVID-19 infections. The National Capital Region or NCR, along with nearby provinces, have been placed under Alert Level 3,  restricting non-essential travels especially for minors, senior citizens and immunocompromised individuals, face-to-face classes in basic education, events/concerts, and gatherings in residences with individuals not belonging to the same household.

It has been reported that those who were previously infected with the coronavirus or vaccinated against it already have some degree of immunity, although such immunity may fade over time. While experts continue to find ways in battling this virus, they advise that getting booster shots this year may still be required to shield us from upcoming mutations.

Many cold, flu and COVID-19 symptoms overlap, making these illnesses tougher to differentiate.  This is why it’s important to familiarize ourselves with their manifestations. The top five (5) symptoms of the Omicron variant are runny nose, headache, fatigue, sneezing and sore throat. While the Delta virus continues to float around, it’s better to know how to tell it apart from Omicron. But always remember, it’s difficult to tell by symptoms alone what caused an infection. Once you have the signs, you still need to confirm them.

The Delmicron is not a new variant but a combination of the Delta and Omicron strains.  According to the Washington Post, the Flurona, on the other hand, is not a distinct disease but refers to when a person is infected with both flu and coronavirus. It has been detected in the United States, Brazil, Israel, Hungary and even the Philippines.

Seems like we’re back in familiar territory. How concerned should we be as we deal with this shape-shifting virus? Has mankind truly evolved in terms of coping with this pandemic? Aside from being extra cautious, how do we ‘up our game’?

1. Get jabbed. Though there is still no clear evidence of the COVID-19 vaccine’s efficacy, getting vaccinated is the only way to protect you and your loved ones against serious infections.

2. Keep following the protocols. Don’t rely solely on the vaccine. Even if you are already fully vaccinated or have the booster shot, practice health measures. Stay home and stay safe. If you need to go out, make sure to wear your mask properly, observe social distancing and maintain proper hygiene.

3. Exercise and eat right. The healthier you are, the longer you will live. Physical activity and diet are good for your overall health.

4. Boost your immune system. Strengthening your defenses increases your chance of surviving COVID-19.

5. Don’t forget your mental health. Social distancing does not mean isolating yourself from others. Stay connected. Lessen your social media intake and learn to manage your stress.

6. Find ways to secure your health. A reliable and affordable health insurance plan helps ease your worries during these times of uncertainties. Make sure to have a health plan in place right before you need it.
