On December 27, 2022, Republic Act 11934 or commonly known as the SIM Registration Act (SRA) was implemented by the Philippine government. It requires all SIM card owners to be registered with their respective telecommunications providers within a specified timeframe. Failure to comply with the registration results in the deactivation of SIM cards.
This regulation aims to combat activities such as scams, smishing and other forms of online and mobile fraud facilitated by anonymous prepaid SIM cards. By associating each SIM card with a valid identification of an individual, authorities can easily track and investigate suspicious activities. Instances of fraud involving phone SIM cards have been increasing. In 2020, there were 236 recorded cases, which rose to 1895 the following year.
Register your sim cards before the deadline set for the networks. Globe SIM card owners must register by July 25, 2023 while Smart subscribers have had until April 26 to register.
