The New Normal Education in the Philippines

September 11, 2020

Learning in the new normal is a challenge for the teachers, students and even parents. After postponing the opening of online classes last August 24, DepEd now confirms that they are ready for October’s opening of classes, for the school year 2020 to 2021, through blended learning approaches after reaching more than 23 million enrollees.

Blended learning is a combination of both online and offline learning methodologies with the use of technology. Online is when the students study with their teacher and classmates through an application that uses a webcam while offline is when the teacher provides the students with the lesson, seatwork or assignment that they can finish at their own pace, within the deadline. All works are submitted and graded via online.

This new way of learning brought by COVID-19 pandemic can be an additional challenge during this tough time. And since going back to the “normal” we’re all accustomed to isn’t going to happen anytime soon, let’s all do the best we could to adjust and make this current situation work. Remember, the goal of online learning is to keep the students engaged academically in order to retain what they have learned.

Here are the things that you need to do and prepare before the school starts:

Setup a designated study space. Assign a designated spot in your home where you can convert to a classroom for your kids. Prepare the learning materials like headphones, laptop/tablet, mouse, notebooks, pens and paper. Put the materials and supplies in places where your kids can easily have access to within the study room. Make sure to keep the area tidy and remove all possible distractions to keep your children’s focus.

Do test runs. Try to make an online mock up presentation with your children. This is a way of introducing the new setup, showing them how to navigate the computer and familiarizing them with the new apps and softwares that they need to access and use during their formal class.

Establish a routine. Homeschooling or Distance Learning doesn’t mean no rules and routines. Start by waking them up early and letting them wear proper clothes as if they are really going to school. Also, follow a break time schedule for recess and lunch to give them ample time to relax and rest. Make sure to prepare healthy snacks and meals. Print or write down your kids’ schedule and place it on a noticeable spot like in front of the computer or stick it on their working table. This will help them remember and stay on track. Parents or guardians need to guide the kids during the first month or until you know that your kids are used to it and that schedules are followed.

Keep yourself updated. Always check your kids’ email for assignments and projects to be submitted. Just because your kids are learning online and at home, it doesn’t mean that they should be working alone or independently. Parents’ participation and cooperation is very important to make sure that your kids are complying and learning well.

Stay positive and ensure your family’s well-being. Despite the sudden shift to online learning and given the technical difficulties that you may encounter throughout the school year, you still need to set a good example by staying calm and positive. As much as possible, create a supportive environment especially that this setup is new to them. Don’t forget to give positive affirmation to keep them motivated and to encourage them to continue what they are doing.

As parents, staying on top of things is very important. Ensure your family’s welfare by making sure that everyone is eating a balanced meal, taking their vitamins regularly, exercising three times a week for at least 20 minutes, having a yearly flu vaccine shot and following the other vaccination schedules.

Most importantly, having a health protection in place for your loved ones makes your life in this new normal less stressful. Health insurance acts as your emergency fund in case a family member gets sick and hospitalized.

Paramount Direct offers health care insurance from ages 20 to 64 years old. These products are more of a reimbursement type, where benefits are directly paid to the insured at the end of hospital confinement.

Both Hospital Income Benefit Plan and HealthCare Cash Plan products have family coverage. Your children from 0 months to 20 years old can be added as dependent members. Each of this product provides daily cash assistance for regular and dread disease confinements plus lump sum benefit for long-term confinements.

Visit www.paramountdirect.com for more information about each product - its features, benefits and premiums and apply online.

Finding the balance as a parent and mentor for your kids can be difficult, but once you learn the techniques everything should be easy and you’ll find great rewards for your hardships.
