Things to Avoid to Keep Our Lungs Healthy

August 17, 2018

The lungs are part of the respiratory system which consist of a group of organs that help you breathe. Once the oxygen is inhaled, it is then transferred to the bloodstream and carried through your body. Since every cell in your body needs oxygen it is important to inhale clean and fresh air, but with the air quality and pollution that we have these days how could that be possible?

August is National Lung Month. To increase awareness and help prevent lung diseases, we have come up with four things that you should avoid to maintain the good health of your lungs:

  1. Smoking - As you know, smoking is bad for your health because it may cause cancer, emphysema and heart disease. But did you know that it also damages your brain and increases the chance of developing an Alzheimer’s disease? Recent study shows that a smoker who has Alzheimer’s disease could have a mental decline of up to five times faster than non-smokers.

  1. Secondhand smoke - Do you think you are safe if you do not smoke? No, because when non-smokers are exposed to secondhand smoke, you get the same harmful chemicals as the smokers do. As much as possible, if you are in a public place don’t stay in a smoking area or if someone smokes in a private place, go somewhere else where you won’t inhale the harmful chemicals.  Nicotine and other toxic chemicals stay in the air for 4 hours which is still bad for your health. Secondhand smoke affects the mental development of children as well as the baby inside the mother’s womb.

  2. Stress - Sometimes, you couldn’t avoid stress but there are breathing exercises that could help you reduce it. For example abdominal breathing. This is when the inhaled air is deeply drawn into the lungs. It helps the nervous system and brain to function effectively.

Regular practice of proper breathing helps cure dizziness, fatigue, depression, palpitation and many more. Here are some tips on how to do it:

  • Sit comfortably

  • Make sure that your back is well-supported

  • Lift your chin

  • Slowly breathe deeply (as the air fills both of your lungs)

  • Hold your breath for at least 3 seconds

  • Breathe out slowly and feel the relief

  • Do atleast 5 to 10 deep breaths

  1. Infection - Colds and cough may develop into bronchitis or pneumonia when not treated immediately. To avoid getting infected with viruses, don’t go to public places during the colds season and always observe proper hygiene like washing your hands, taking a bath everyday and brushing your teeth regularly. Better yet, have a flu vaccine to protect you and your whole family from acquiring viruses easily.
