What Are You Most Thankful For in 2020?

December 25, 2020

As we bid farewell to 2020, we try to make meaning out of the things that happened to us in the past year. Somehow, we feel fortunate to have made it until the end. With the pandemic still raging on, most of us have been preoccupied with our daily chores, work-from-home demands, and physical and emotional challenges that we forget to realize the little things in our everyday lives that we should be thankful for. It has been a difficult year but the dark chapters shouldn’t keep us from practicing gratitude.

There’s always something to be grateful for. It’s about time we appreciate and celebrate every breakthrough, whether big or small. Seeing the positive side in every situation and having a grateful heart will help us get by.

Take this opportunity to pause for a moment and review your 2020. Look into your heart and ask yourself this question, “What Am I Most Thankful For This Past Year?”.

Will these make it to your gratitude list?

Quality Time with Family.  It used to be difficult to find time for family as everyone is busy with their jobs and everyday schedules. But the lockdown restrictions  have become an opportunity for us to improve our ties with our loved ones, bringing us closer to one another.

“Before this pandemic, my eldest daughter was always with her friends and she would never talk to me. But because of the community quarantine, she started to appreciate me and my hard work. Now, she cooks for us, helps me with the household chores and most of all, we spend a lot of time talking.” Prency Roxas, 44 years old, housewife.

Rest and Relaxation. Although COVID-19 has been stressful, our stay-at-home setup has allowed us to rest and sleep more. Take time to enjoy the extra hours by breathing slowly in order to regulate your heart rate and blood pressure, listening  to soothing music, taking long walks, catching up on your reading or exercising.

“Before, I was praying to have a long break from work because of too much stress. Now that I’m working from home, I see to it that I get to relax and make the most of my time. For me, it’s been a blessing in disguise.” Maricel Blanco, 43 years old, banker.

Good Health. You may not always be in perfect form but the fact that you are still alive and kicking is already a big blessing in itself.

“This year is an eye-opener for all of us, making us realize that we are all susceptible to getting sick of COVID-19. And that we may survive or die any time. So, I cherish every moment I spend with the people I love. Like this one, who knows this could be my last conversation?”, Kit Alvaro, 30-year old self-employed.

Opportunities. If there is one bright side to this pandemic, it’s the different opportunities it has opened for us somehow - opportunity to devote time to more meaningful things, reflect on our day-to-day lives and reorganize our thoughts and priorities.

“Even though I’m just 11 years old, I think I have become mature because of what happened. I realized that health and family are more important than anything in this world”, Lorraine Pascual, Grade 5 student

Having health protection for our loved ones is a chance we shouldn’t pass up. Preparedness is the best way to make us stress-free and less fearful of the future. It can literally save lives.
