Working and Succeeding Abroad: Survival Tips for OFWs

July 26, 2024

Over the years, Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) became symbols of resilience. Despite being away from their family and facing challenges in a different country, they continue to persevere for the promise of a better future.

From adjusting to a different culture to being separated from loved ones, we look into the common challenges faced by OFWs and some effective coping strategies one could adopt.

  1. Culture Shock

Cultural differences can be one of the biggest difficulties for OFWs. Adjusting to a new language, customs, and working culture can be overwhelming. Before their departure, OFWs need to take the mandatory Pre-Employment Orientation Seminar (PEOS) that aims to guide OFWs about the realities of employment abroad. PEOS provides information about the destination country's culture, customs, and work environment, helping OFWs to prepare mentally for the transition.

To combat culture shock, OFWs can connect with other kababayans or expatriates who can offer support and advice. They can gradually immerse themselves in the local culture through food, events, and activities. It would also help to learn basic phrases in the local language for easier communication. Keep an open mind and be patient during the adjustment period.

  1. Homesickness

Being away from family and familiar surroundings can cause feelings of loneliness and homesickness. Stay connected with loved ones regularly through social media and messaging apps. Decorate living space with familiar items from home and practice self-care through exercise and hobbies.

OFWs can also join Filipino community groups or associations in the host country and participate in local events or volunteer activities to build a sense of belonging.

  1. Abuse

Unfortunately, some OFWs are mistreated and abused at work. Maltreatment, discrimination, and wrongful accusations are just some of the unpredictable situations they might encounter abroad. OFWs should learn to acquaint themselves with their rights and know where to seek help from authorities or advocacy groups. It’s important to know the location of the Philippine Embassy, relevant support offices, and pertinent laws such as REPUBLIC ACT No. 10022 for their own protection.

To look out for potential abuse, OFWs should be aware of warning signs such as:

  • Extended working hours without proper compensation

  • Withholding of passports or important documents by employers

  • Verbal, physical, or emotional abuse

  • Denial of days off or vacation time

  • Unsafe working conditions

  • Delayed or withheld salary payments

  • Restrictions on communication or movement

If any of these signs are present, OFWs should document incidents and seek help from the authorities or support organizations specializing in migrant worker rights.

  1. Financial Challenges

Despite the promise of higher salaries abroad, OFWs need a better way to manage their finances. Sending the majority of their earnings back home, they often sacrifice their own needs. OFWs can start with budgeting, saving for emergencies, and seeking financial literacy resources to ensure long-term financial stability.

OFWs also need to be cautious of get-rich-quick schemes or investments promising unrealistic returns. They need to research thoroughly before investing in any opportunity and be wary of unsolicited investment offers, especially through social media or email. Never share personal financial information with unverified sources and stay updated on common scams targeting OFWs and how to avoid them.

While employers provide valuable insurance benefits to OFWs, a tailored plan can offer additional protection. Paramount Life & General Insurance Corporation offers OFW Insurance that has benefits for repatriation, compassionate visit, medical evacuation, natural and accidental death, total disability and dismemberment, money claims, and subsistence allowance.

By learning to adapt and using available resources, OFWs can conquer challenges and work towards a better future for themselves and their families.
